The Marketing Off-Ramp

The questions I wish I'd asked myself sooner

A free checklist for people on the technical side of digital marketing who are trying to figure out whether they're having a challenge with their job or if it's actually a bigger career issue (namely, every job in this field is likely to keep having the same issues).

I spent most of my career on the technical side of marketing. Setting up campaigns, migrating websites, building email and CRM automations, building the reports.

It took me a long time to work out whether I had a job problem or something bigger. In fact, longer than I'd like to admit.

So I wrote down the nine questions I would have handed myself back then. About ten minutes, and you need a pen. While it will not tell you what to do - it will tell you which kind of problem you have so you can start working on the ideal next steps.

This one is written for a specific background. See how many of these are true for you.
  • Most of your week goes to building and running things, not designing or writing them
  • You have set up campaigns inside an ad/email/marketing platform yourself, not just approved someone else's
  • You have been the person who works out why the numbers on a marketing report look wrong
  • You have moved data from one system into another and kept track of which field goes where
  • You have built or maintained a report somebody else made decisions from
  • You have been in the middle when the developers and the business people were describing the same thing in two different vocabularies
If most of that looks like your week, put your email address in below and I'll send you the free checklist to download.
If your work was mostly design or copywriting, this one isn't written for you and I would rather say so than take up your time.
I'll email it to you straight away, then a few notes about what I did next. Unsubscribe whenever you want.

What's in it

  • An exercise for finding what repeats across every employer you have worked for
  • Two questions about being measured on results you don't control
  • The one question that separates wanting to leave from knowing where to go
  • A short section on how to read your own answers
